Interest? The two super/great powers have got huge spheres of influence which are in touch in some parts of the world. Central Asia, Africa, Oceania, South America.

The risk of a new cold war, a US vs China cold war is present, now and in the future.

Taiwan is a point of tense. US Navy is there ... So US are engaged with China and China is. But it's local. The great world confrontation is economical and political.

In being engaged. This is less visible and clear. But the situation of being engaged can generate natioanl spirit and internal cohesion + possibility to build alliances or to make them stronger.

When powers reach a certain level of technology and a certain dimension it's absolutely absurd to think to a real "engagement". We will see some "games", like the one on the chessboard in central Asia, but direct confrontations, like the cold war between US and USSR are no more realistic to plan. The interconnection of the whole planetary economy allows no more similar intentions.

india might become somewhat a regional power in 20 to 30 years...but its due on china to become a power in 10 to 20 years...the only thing in my opinion that can stop china is by engaging them somewhere in war !!

It depends on China.

A growing power has to make a choice about how to deal with the spheres of influence of the existing powers.

China is spreading its influence in Africa, Asia and in a certain measure South America.

Well it will have to deal with the EU in Africa and with US in South America [historically EU is well present in the "Black continent" and the United States consider South America a kind of natural extention of their system].

Soft approach? In Africa (Sudan and central Africa) this approach can be soft, but it's deep and disturbing for EU and US.
